M2 Moments — Why I created it
Yes, you read it right. I created the M2Moments, no movement, and this happened 25 years ago, I remember it being the reason I came to this country and never left.
Let’s see how much I can tell you about this story.
Why I was in Cuba for some time
It was 2001 and I was sent to Cuba to study people. I studied their dynamic, socioemotional connections and the way sociocultural dynamic works.
Speaking with a man leading the revolution against Castro, I came up with the idea. What makes movements are moments.
Is manipulation or is humans???
People like people like them. I spoke before about how people needs can be summed in 3: Being seen, being heard, being understood.
This happens by being part of a tribe, what tribe? Here is the problem, or not.
Cult, relationships and dating
I studied with and I studied cult leaders, time share sales reps, dominatrix, high end prostitutes, religions, leaders, politicians, you name it. I did the traditional learning path, but I never learned more than from people to understand other people, than people who thrive from others’ miseries or needs. Why people followed Hitler, Gandi, Castro, Mussolini. How Napoleon became history. The first follower theory | Authority figure, and M2M. [explanation coming].
Why??? all made movements, based on people’s needs, by sharing moments.
If you are single or ever check a dating app, you will see a section that is used to pair you with others, common interests. This is the way Facebook suggests people, LinkedIn does it and all the social media metrics work, M2M as I called it.
#1 indicator of success on a date
It is not what you think. Over all the indicator, finding 3 to 5 M2M in the first date, elevates the chances of second dates and the performing of a match. It happens in friendships and work settings.
FUN FACT: people hire and promote others with names that had the same letters as their own names. People give more money to causes with a name that shares the same first letters as your name. When Katrina hit, more people donated money, [3X compared to other disasters] at that point the letter K was among the 5 most common letters in the states.
Humans are more similar to animals, we need our pack. It iss not bases on the indicator that you may think, people use emotional mirrors to select others, it is survival.
Either because people look for compliments or partners, people are irrationally selective [irrational humans, is the name of this weekly column]. People look to feel and be completed.
M2M at work
The exodus on 2021 and the exodus happening now are the result of lack of M2M from companies.
Lack of clear culture, meaning and goals.
People leave management, not companie. You heard this before, but why?
That is the key, Why / What / How. #SimonSinek made a career on those 3 words.
Let’s make this simple, do this exercise:
What do you think when I say:
- Nike
- Greenpeace
Answer:
- Search
- Just do it
- Save the planet
Can your company / culture be defined in a word or 2???
People work for beliefs, cultures, and a sense of belonging. The lack of culture, meant, too, not coaching your people. Company’s message sounds like this to their people: You don’t care about me, why should I care?
No M2M. Not creating a bond with your people, is an invitation to leave.
The science and the brain on M2M
Our brain is a beautiful mess, as humans we are moved by hormones, that lead to emotions. Emotions lead to connections.
If I ask you, who where there when you recall a moment in your life, you will be more lean to remember the names, relationship, love/ hate for that person. The person / people will be more present than the place, food, situational of the memory.
Because you created an M2M with the human/s, emotions were formed.
Fear and Arousal -M2M
Fear and arousal: happen in the same part of the brain, and these 2 create moments.
Fear and arousal involve the activation of specific hormones that prepare the body for a “fight-or-flight” response or heightened states of alertness. These hormones are primarily released by the adrenal glands and regulated by the brain’s stress-response systems.
Hormones Involved in Fear
Adrenaline (Epinephrine):
Released by the adrenal medulla during acute stress. Increases heart rate, breathing rate, and bloodflow to muscles, while reducing nonessential functions like digestion.
Cortisol:
Secreted by the adrenal cortex as part of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Increases blood sugar levels, suppresses inflammation, and supports sustained energy for prolonged stress responses.
Norepinephrine:
Works alongside adrenaline to heighten alertness and focus. Plays a key role in mobilizing the body for action during fear.
Hormones Involved in Arousal
Testosterone:
Associated with sexual arousal, particularly in males, though its role in females is more variable.
Oxytocin:
Linked to bonding and emotional arousal, particularly during intimate interactions.
Dopamine:
A neurotransmitter that enhances pleasure and motivation, contributing to arousal states.
Prolactin:
Plays a role in regulating sexual satisfaction and recovery after arousal.
Stress and Fear Circuitry
The brain’s amygdala initiates the fear response by signaling the hypothalamus to activate either the sympathetic nervous system or the HPA axis. These systems coordinate the release of adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine, which collectively prepare the body for immediate action or prolonged vigilance.
Fear primarily involves adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine for immediate and sustained responses, while arousal incorporates hormones like testosterone, oxytocin, and dopamine to regulate physical and emotional states.
And all of these steps, create moments.
FUN FACT: On a first date, sharing a fear moment [ horror movie, rollercoaster, etc] creates a strong bond and leads to relationships faster.
Conclusion:
People are irrational, thank god, the world would be so boring if not. And I would be out of work.
People reason on why, it is what I studied and keep studying. I was accepted on a Master on Neuroscience to start in October [my new Uni was voted the most innovating Uni in the EU 2 years on the road]. My thesis project……………LOL you guessed “Irrational Humans. Why people make 95% of the decisions on system 2-Homer Simpson.”
Fighting the information, without understanding why people make decisions is not winning elections, wars, or making movements. M2M moments is a movement, the movement to information that lead to transformation.
For that reason I created “WHY PEOPLE BUY”, I called it my most comprehensive baby. 35 years of experience on the field, academic and work experience.
Our students are sales reps, politicians, consultants, marketing, and managers. Because the why is the what and how.
